This is Saturday, 19 May 2007 Issue of The Daily DX "News form Dayton" The Review of the SWODXA DX Dinner is in Blue.
Hi Gang,
It is Saturday night. I'll be on my way home before the sunrises Sunday morning here in Dayton.
This year's event was great. I arrived in Dayton early Thursday afternoon with K2PLF, Marty Green. We got checked into our rooms and grabbed a nice lunch. Thursday night was the ARRL Donor dinner where the guest speaker was none other than KC5ACR, Bill McArthur, the Commander of the 12th International Space Station Expedition. Bill was the first person to make DXCC from outer space!
Friday I spent most of the day touring the flea market with my neighbor and good friend W3LPL, Frank Donovan. LPL always hits the flea market first thing, looking for those great deals. Unfortunately I don't think he found any however I got a great deal on a Bencher paddle for my 6 meter station.
No more fumbling around with my original Bencher switching it between the MP
(HF) station and the FT847 (6 meter) station. I don't want to miss that quick 6 meter DX opening! After touring the flea market it was inside to turn in a few more cards to the DXCC Desk. After 3 PM is a great time as there were no lines! Next it was time for a sit down with a few friends before rushing back to the Crowne Plaza and the DX dinner. This year's DX dinner, hosted and sponsored by the SWODXA was one of the better events in a long time. It did not run over, as it has just about every year. The program was fantastic with Dr. Beldar (N0AX, Ward Silver) giving everyone a good laugh in under 20 minutes. I sure hope someone video recorded the good Dr. and his many recommendations and suggestions! Afterwards the CQ DX Hall of Fame awards were given out. This year was a little different in that the presentations were given to two groups of two. The first two were traveling DXpeditions G3TXF, Roger Western, and G3TXF, Nigel Cawthorne. The two Brits started their DXpedition joint ventures in the 60's and have done close to 30 events as a team. This was Roger's second induction into CQ's Hall of Fame as he is already a member of the CQ Contest Hall of fame. The next two were the husband and wife team of I1JQJ, Pregliasco, and IK1ADH, Valeria Pregliasco, from the 425 DX News. Next the SWODXA presented the VU7RG/VU7MY team with DXpedition of the year. Also the 4O6DX team, made up of mostly SWODXA members was given the club's DXpedition of the year. N0FW, Pete, announced on behalf of N7CQQ, John Kennon, of an upcoming DXpedition to Clipperton Island (FO/C), which will take place in early March 2008. This DXpedition will be lead by N6OX, Bob Grimmick. After the DX dinner it was into the multiple suites and then to bed for a few hours rest.
Saturday it was back to the hamfest. This time to see all the indoor vendors. Just before the DX forum I stopped in room 1 and 4 to get a good seat. The Contest forum was still going on and there was a great video done by Icom on K3LR's super contest station. The video will be available soon on the web, probably on K3LR's (www.k3lr.com) or ICOM's Web page later this week. Before the DX forum began K3NA, Eric Scace, and DL6LAU, Carsten Esch, announced a multi-national team will be heading to Ducie Island (VP6/D) in February 2008. More details on this will be in the Monday issue of The Daily DX and The Weekly DX. During the DX Forum KB8NW, Tedd Mirgliotta, started off speaking about the history of the OPDX bulletin. Afterwards excellent talks were given on KH8SI, YX0A/YX0LIX, ZL8R, VU7RG/VU7MY and BS7H. The DX forum ran over, but almost no one left the room as they were glued to their seats. Next our car pool gang (W3LPL, K3NA, GU4YOX and W3UR) headed back to the Crowne Plaza and then on to the Contest dinner. There four inductees were announced for the CQ Contest Hall of Fame. They were in order S59AA, Franc Bogataj; K5RC, Tom Taormina; K6SSS, Fred Caposella; and posthumous N6ZZ, Phil Goetz. As always the contest dinner finish at break neck speed as K1AR, John Dorr, ran it just like a contest!
Time for bed as I'll be getting up at 4:30 AM Sunday morning in order to catch an early flight back home. I'll post some photos to The Daily DX Web site in the next day or two.
